Are you considering abortion for your unplanned pregnancy, but lacking some of the details on what it would entail? You’re not alone. Many women don’t have all the facts about abortion before making a decision about their future.

First, you should know there are several types of abortion including drug-induced and surgical. Here is what you need to know:

What is a Drug-Induced or Medication Abortion?

The abortion pill, otherwise known as Mifepristone and Misoprotosol, is an abortive combination that can be taken before 10 weeks gestation.

It works by blocking the pregnancy hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to grow. Then, about 48 hours after taking the second pill, your body will expel the fetus and all contents from your uterus through labor-like contractions and bleeding.

There are some risks with this type of abortion. Your uterus may not expel all of its contents, which can require surgical intervention. You also may experience a hemorrhage with your heavy bleeding. An infection is also possible and will require treatment by antibiotics.

The possible side effects of the medication are nausea, cramping, vomiting, and headache. This method is contraindicated for people who use an IUD for birth control. This means taking this medication under these circumstances could put your health at risk and might even lead to death.

The abortion pill is illegal under current Tennessee law after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

What is a Surgical Abortion?

During the second trimester, surgical abortion happens via dilation and evacuation. You will be given an anesthetic before the procedure. A speculum is inserted into the vagina and dilators are used to expand the cervix. Forceps or suction cups are used to pull the fetal tissue from your womb.

After this procedure you may experience bleeding for up to two weeks. Risks include infection and damage to the uterus, which may lead to infertility, or the inability to have children in the future.

This type of abortion can cost up to $3,000.
