If you’re considering abortion, you deserve to know the types of procedures that take place. There are two main types of abortion: surgical and medical abortion.

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion is a more invasive procedure. To know what type of surgical abortion procedure you’re eligible for, learn how far along your pregnancy is (gestational age). Finding out the gestational age can be done quickly with our no-cost ultrasound during your pre-abortion assessment.

Risks of surgical abortion include perforation of the uterus, damage to the cervix, scar tissue, and infection.

Medical Abortion

You take two different medications to end a pregnancy during a medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill.

The first drug, mifepristone, thins the uterus lining and prevents the pregnancy from staying implanted or growing. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24- 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Side effects and potential risks include heavy bleeding and cramping, the possibility of an incomplete abortion, and infection. The FDA only recommends using medical abortion up to 70 days past the first day of missed period.

Am I Eligible for Abortion?

Once you confirm the number of weeks you have been pregnant, you’ll know what type of abortion procedure you can have. Patients are required to have counseling which gives them information on all of their options. A waiting period of 48 hours is required in the state of Tennessee after counseling.

Before you can have an abortion, the following is recommended:

  • Medical history
  • Ultrasound – to rule out an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage and to identify the gestational age
  • Lab work
  • STI testing
  • Physical exam
